In the various twists and turns of unfolding events, Alexander Henderson is greatly favoured then scorned by the king within months. But as incidents erupt, negotiations fail and positions harden the destinies of some in England and Scotland begin to move together. In 1646, when King Charles 1 realised he had lost the English Civil War, he fled north from Oxford and surrendered himself to the Scottish Presbyterian army who kept him prisoner in Newcastle, when they were occupying that city.  Alexander Henderson was presented with an opportunity to try to persuade King Charles to consent to the reformation of the English Church and the establishment of Presbyterianism in England.
