A tale of two inns. The Crook Inn (on the A701 near Tweedsmuir) and Birkhill Cottage (on the A708 near the Grey Mare’s Tail Nature Reserve) were both used by Covenanters as well as Claverhouse and his dragoons. But what would happen if they were both there at the same time?

“Lanark is a real Covenanter town…” Matthew Vogan and Jimmy Fisher are at a large obelisk in St Kentigern’s churchyard in Lanark, which is covered on all four sides with inscriptions of names. It was built to commemorate the men from the town who were martyred, fined or banished for their adherence to the Covenanting cause.
