In 1646, when King Charles 1 realised he had lost the English Civil War, he fled north from Oxford and surrendered himself to the Scottish Presbyterian army who kept him prisoner in Newcastle, when they were occupying that city. Alexander Henderson was presented with an opportunity to try to persuade King Charles to consent to the reformation of the English Church and the establishment of Presbyterianism in England. Matthew Vogan is in Newcastle to explain more.
